Technical Discipline: Advanced Cabin Safety

The advanced cabin safety discipline focuses on anticipating and developing measures to mitigate threats to occupant safety resulting from an accident or security-related event. As the cabin interior evolves with new furniture, seating, materials, alternative arrangements, and other features, this discipline balances the safety of all passengers and crew with the advancement of innovation. This discipline also supports the introduction of new aircraft through early engagement in vehicle design across all types and sizes of aircraft, including powered lift.

Discipline leadership works with FAA engineers, industry, operators, standards development organizations, academia, and international aviation organizations to develop policy, guidance, standards, and training necessary to protect occupants from the effects of an accident or acts of unlawful interference. This work involves emergency escape systems, flammability and fire protection, flotation, and elements of crash dynamics. Key focus areas of this work also include ballistic protection, intrusion resistance, smoke and fume protection, and designs to deter or mitigate concealed devices, all aimed at identifying and mitigating security-related threats to safety.
