Don Young Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative (DYAASI) Report

The Don Young Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative (DYAASI) continues to advance aviation safety across Alaska through focused investment, collaboration, and implementation of safety improvements identified through the initiative. Building on the recommendations developed through DYAASI and its predecessor, the FAA Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative (FAASI), the FAA is working with aviation stakeholders and across multiple FAA lines of business to address Alaska’s unique aviation safety challenges.

DYAASI is now focused on delivering measurable safety improvements throughout the state, with significant work underway to improve the availability and reliability of weather information, communications, navigation, surveillance, and other critical aviation infrastructure. These efforts include expanding and modernizing weather observing capabilities, improving telecommunications supporting remote aviation infrastructure, expanding surveillance coverage, improving access to instrument flight procedures, and addressing other safety needs identified by Alaska’s aviation community.

The FAA continues to engage Alaska pilots, aircraft operators, airports, communities, industry organizations, and other stakeholders to identify emerging safety concerns and help ensure DYAASI investments address the operational realities of flying in Alaska. Through this collaborative approach, DYAASI is moving from recommendations to implementation and delivering safety improvements intended to provide lasting benefits to Alaska’s aviation system.

DYAASI progress reports, implementation plans, project updates, and other program information are available on the DYAASI page
