Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB)
Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) is located 20 miles north of Orlando International Airport (KMCO) and is a good alternative for the general and business aviation communities. Pilot experience varies widely from pre-solo student to seasoned airline captains. The robust amount of bird activity on and around the airport increases the possibility of bird strikes. SFB's three parallel runways with staggered thresholds and one intersecting runway make it a prime candidate for runway misalignment. Know Before You Go
SFB ATCT Operates: 0630L – 2300L
Administrative Office: Open 0730L to 1600L M-F
Business Phone: 407-330-9816
The RWY configuration consists of RWYs 9/27 L/R/C as well as 18/36.
The airspace at SFB is Class C and underlies Orlando Class B airspace.
Hot Spots
HS1: Maintain vigilance. TWY C and RWY 27C markings are often confused.
- Aircraft landing RWY 18, as well as aircraft landing on RWY 9L/27R, instructed to exit onto RWY 18 then turn right onto TWY C, have mistakenly turned right onto RWY 27C resulting in a runway incursion.
- It is always advisable to verify with ATC when you are unsure whether to hold or proceed.
- RWY markings are white. Markings on surfaces not used for takeoff/landing like TWY markings, chevrons, RWY shoulder and RWY turn-on markings etc., are yellow.
Wrong Surface Landing Risk
- If available, back up all visual approaches with an instrument approach or GPS Waypoint to help ensure that you are lined up for the correct surface.
- View the From the Flight Deck-Wrong Surface Landings video for additional mitigation strategies.
Surface Movement Area Cautions
Holding Position Markings on Taxiways Located in Runway Approach Areas.
- These markings indicate where it is necessary to hold an aircraft on a taxiway located in the approach or departure area of a runway so that the aircraft does not interfere with the operations on that runway.
- These markings are collocated with the runway approach/departure area holding position signage. When specifically instructed by ATC “Hold short of Runway 9C approach or Runway 27C departure area” the pilot MUST STOP so that no part of the aircraft extends beyond the holding position marking.
General
- RWY 9L/27R is the primary operations runway.
- RWY 9R/27L is the primary flight training runway.
- When requesting VFR clearance to a direction or flight following- upon initial check in, please provide call sign, type of aircraft, direction of flight or destination, altitude requested, and ATIS code.
- ATC regulations require a readback of specific instructions. This includes your call sign with the runway assignment, taxiway, and the hold-short instructions in the same transmission. Any readback that does not include these requirements will have to be repeated, even if you believe you are the only aircraft on frequency.
Traffic Patterns
- During flight training and while in the pattern, attempt to fly a 1-mile upwind, crosswind, and base. This helps the TWR plan for departure/sequence gaps. Advise if a deviation from these restrictions is needed.
Ground Control (GC)
- If unsure of instructions, please do not hesitate to request clarification.
- Pay close attention to hot spots pertaining to RWY 9C/27C and hold short lines on TWY L and TWY R.
- TWR may ask the pilot to taxi to the right side of taxiways for opposite direction traffic.
Takeoff/Departure
- Advise GC if you want or do not want an intersection departure.
- SFB utilizes “Line Up and Wait” (LUAW) to instruct a pilot to taxi onto the departure.
- RWY and hold position until cleared for takeoff. It is not authorization for takeoff. For mitigation strategies, view the From the Flight Deck-Line Up and Wait video.
Arrival/Landing
- Upon initial check-in, advise the tower of your intentions such as traffic pattern requests, full stop etc. and include parking information.
- Advise if you are a SOLO.
- Advise if you need full stop taxi-backs to the active runway or are preparing for a student solo session.
- Land and Hold Short (LAHSO) clearances may be issued to general aviation aircraft. Advise if you are unable to participate.
