Order purpose statement

This order establishes the Air Traffic Organization (ATO) Reliability Centered Maintenance Program for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This handbook provides engineering organizations a standard reference they can use for applying the principles of RCM in the evaluation of both new and legacy systems and subsystems preventive maintenance requirements. This handbook introduces basic principles of maintenance and illustrates how these principles establish rules for good maintenance tasks. It describes how we use these rules to develop maintenance requirements and associated documentation for new systems and equipment as well as how we evaluate and improve the quality and effectiveness of well-established maintenance programs.
