Technical Discipline: Aviation Fuels

Aviation fuel is a specialized type of fuel designed to power aircraft engines safely and efficiently. The discipline of Aviation Fuels involves identifying and mitigating safety and security risks related to aviation fuels and additives, alternative aviation fuels, fuel supply infrastructure, propulsion lubricants, and other fuel-related issues that impact certification, operational requirements, policy, and research.

Discipline leadership supports collaboration with the aviation fuel industry, other government agencies, standards organizations, and academia worldwide to safety transition to unleaded aviation gasoline and implement sustainable aviation fuels. This work informs FAA policy, guidance, and training, including guiding research and development efforts to improve safety, addressing production and supply chain risks, and supporting efforts such as Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE), a government-industry initiative to eliminate leaded aviation fuels in piston-engine aircraft safely by the end of 2030.
