Technical Discipline: Flight Deck Human Factors

Human factors is a multidisciplinary field that generates and compiles information about human capabilities and limitations and applies it to design, development, and evaluation of equipment, systems, facilities, operations, procedures, operational environments, and organizations, for safe, efficient, and effective human performance. Flight deck human factors involve how pilots operate aircraft and interact with aircraft systems, including displays, controls, procedures, and training. This discipline addresses a variety of topics including, automation, alerting, human error, workload, complexity, human fatigue and human contributions to safety.

Discipline leadership is responsible for developing regulations, guidance, procedures, and training that support the certification, production approval, and continued airworthiness of aircraft, as well as the operational approvals and the training and certification of pilots. Additional work includes sponsoring and supporting research, participating in accident investigation activities, and conducting safety data analyses. These activities involve international collaboration with industry, other government agencies, standards development organizations, and academia.
