Training for Approach Lighting Systems (ALS)
Due July 31, 2025:
Non-federally employed technicians must complete training and exams for the type of ALS they maintain.
Failure to meet the deadline will result in the FAA NOTAMing out of service the systems you maintain. The NOTAMs will remain in place until you complete the training / exam, and the associated hands-on performance exam.

1. MALS/F/R - Medium Intensity Approach Lighting Systems.

Cost: $163.45
Course Format: The course is contained in a PDF. Students must pass an open book exam, and then the EP15 hands-on performance exam. Students are encouraged to review the open book exam before taking the course. The open book exam can be re-taken at no cost.
Description: This course provides training on the Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL) Systems and Medium Intensity Approach Lighting Systems (MALS) with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (RAIL). Subjects include theory, as well as preventative and corrective maintenance.

3. BUILDING ENVIRONMENTAL CONCEPTS (OPTIONAL)

Course Format: There are 15 hours of video lecture. Further lessons are contained in a PDF. There is also an open book exam.
This course is an OPTIONAL pre-requisite for non-federal technicians to take (or not) at their own discretion. It is broken into three blocks: DC, AC, and solid state/digital. Topics covered include: Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws; parallel and compound circuits; AC sine wave and power characteristics; AC generator theory; harmonics and transformer characteristics; rectification, filtering and regulation; and basic semiconductor theory.
