Aviation Safety Inspector (Aircraft Dispatch)

Oversees airline dispatch and operational control, ensuring compliance with regulations. They monitor dispatch centers and training facilities, provide expertise on policies, and agency orders, and investigate incidents. They also help certify new airlines and conduct regular observations for continuous compliance through the use of a planned surveillance and inspection program.

AVIATION DISPATCH INSPECTOR BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal Aviation Regulations violations in the last five years
  • Valid State driver’s license
  • Fluency in the English language
  • No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance
  • High school graduate or equivalent

QUALIFICATIONS

Medical Requirements

Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector (Aircraft Dispatch) position in a safe and efficient manner, with or without a reasonable accommodation. The minimum medical requirements include the following: 

  • Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read, without strain, printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted)
  • Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted); and
  • Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft.

Applicants not requiring valid second-class FAA medical certificates who are tentatively selected will be required to:

  • Provide documentation from a board-certified physician certifying that they meet the minimal medical requirements; or
  • Individuals who do not meet the minimum medical requirements but who are otherwise qualified will receive an individualized assessment to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position.

Specialized Experience Requirements

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must meet the specialized experience requirements as outlined below. 

  • Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate
  • Recency of experience: A portion of the applicant’s specialized experience must have been gained within the last three years.
  • FG-12 or equivalent grade level/pay band: At least two years of experience as a part 121 scheduled domestic and/or scheduled international (flag) dispatcher, and at least one year of experience in at least one of the following positions: 
    • Air Transportation Supervisor (ATS)
      • Designated Aircraft Dispatcher Examiner (DADE)
      • An Aircraft Dispatcher with primary responsibility for developing, creating, and/or revising dispatch manuals and procedures which require a comprehensive knowledge of FAA regulatory requirements and current FAA policy for a Part 121 Air Carrier; or
      • A Dispatch Instructor for a Part 121 Air Carrier


FG-13 and above or equivalent grade/band level

At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level/pay band in the normal line of progression for positions in this occupation.

Waiver Requirements

When filling positions under this qualification standard, hiring managers may waive the recency of experience qualification requirement for in-service placement actions, including promotions, reassignments, voluntary changes to lower grade/pay band, transfers, or reinstatements to the same or lower grade level/pay band previously held.
