Alternative Hiring Process for Flight Oversight Aviation Safety Inspectors (ASIs)
Develop, administer, or enforce regulations and standards related to civil aviation safety, including the competence of pilots and other airmen. This ASI will not conduct certification (pilot evaluating, testing, and checking) job functions as a required crewmember, including safety pilot. This position will apply a broad knowledge of the aviation industry, aviation safety, and Federal aviation laws, regulations, and policies and participation in the FAA Flight Program would be in a simulator only.
Current incentives available to Flight Oversight ASIs include:
- An alternative hiring process through the On-the-Spot (OTS) hiring authority for entry-level Flight Oversight ASIs by eliminating the competitive application process.
- $10K Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to selected Flight Oversight ASI candidates whose current permanent residence is 100 miles or more away from the offered duty location. You must sign a service agreement and remain in that location for one year.
General Aviation Flight Oversight Inspector Key Requirements
- Must hold a valid or expired Flight Instructor Certificate with an aircraft category rating or have experience serving as an instructor as part of an approved program or course (e.g., Part 121, 135, 141, or 142, or Uniformed Services) which provided instruction in an aircraft or an approved flight simulation training device representing an aircraft. Must have given a minimum of 200 hours of flight instruction in an aircraft, an approved flight simulation training device representing an aircraft, or a combination of both.
- Must hold a valid Airline Transport Pilot Certificate or Commercial Pilot Certificate with an instrument-airplane rating.
- Three years of experience working in an organization with an air carrier, commercial operator, or air agency certificate, an organization whose work has led to the certification of individual airmen, or an organization that operated aircraft.
- Minimum of 1,500 total flight hours.
- Possession of airplane category and single-engine and multi-engine land (airplane) ratings.
- Not more than two flying accidents in the last five years in which the applicant's pilot error was involved.
Air Carrier Flight Oversight Inspector Key Requirements
- At least one year of pilot experience in multi-engine aircraft of more than 12,500 pounds maximum certificated takeoff weight.
- Three years of experience working in an organization with an air carrier, commercial operator, or air agency certificate, an organization whose work led to the certification of individual airmen, or an organization that operated aircraft. At least one year of this experience must be with an organization that operated multiengine aircraft of more than 12,500 pounds maximum takeoff weight.
- Minimum 1,500 total flight hours.
- Must hold a valid Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.
- Not more than two flying accidents during the last five years in which the applicant's pilot error was involved.
Rotorcraft-Helicopter Flight Oversight Key Requirements
- Must hold a valid or expired Flight Instructor Certificate with Rotorcraft-Helicopter category rating or have experience serving as an instructor as part of an approved program or course (e.g., Part 121, 135, 141, or 142, or Uniformed Services) that provided instruction in a Rotorcraft-Helicopter or an approved flight simulation training device representing a Rotorcraft-Helicopter. Must have given a minimum of 200 hours of flight instruction in a Rotorcraft-Helicopter, an approved flight simulation training device representing a Rotorcraft-Helicopter, or a combination of both.
- Must hold an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with a Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating or a Commercial Pilot Certificate with a Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating and Instrument-Helicopter rating.
- Minimum 1,500 total flight hours in an aircraft as pilot-in-command or second–in–command, 1,000 hours of which must be in helicopters.
- Three years of experience working in an organization with an air carrier, commercial operator, or air agency certificate, an organization whose work led to the certification of individual airmen, or an organization that operated aircraft.
- Not more than two flying accidents in the last five years in which the applicant's pilot error was involved.
Qualifications
All flight oversight inspectors must have pilot experience; however, this ASI position does not require a second-class medical certificate. Specialized experience statements will be necessary for each grade and the duties and responsibilities support operations that include everything but hands-on flight controls.

- You must pass a security background investigation.
- An initial drug screening is also required.
