Autopsy Information

One of the Federal Aviation Administration's missions is to prevent and reduce deaths and injuries resulting from aircraft accidents. To accomplish this mission, the FAA has statutory authority and a congressional mandate to conduct crash injury research by collecting relevant data in the interest of protecting public safety. Engineering Sciences Section

The Engineering Sciences Section is made up of the Biodynamics Research Team and the Cabin Safety Research Team. Engineering Sciences Section personnel provide state-of-the-art information, procedures, and equipment evaluations relative to aircraft crash survival, and safety of passengers and crewmembers during normal operations and emergency aircraft evacuation events. For example, the Cabin Safety, and Biodynamics Research Teams are key contributors to the development of national and international aviation safety equipment standards and survival procedures.

Life Sciences Research Section

The Life Sciences Section is comprised of a Health Safety Information Team and an Environmental Aerospace Physiology Research Team.

The Health Safety Information Team performs a variety of functions researching and addressing how well aerospace medicine policy controls and decisions are mitigating risk in aerospace operations, this includes predicting and producing tools to predict the dose of radiation to which passengers and crew are exposed during aerospace operations.

Biomedical Sciences Section

The Biomedical Sciences Section employs professionals in biomarker research, informatics, system and database administration, and health information management. It focuses on generating, collecting, analyzing, and securing aeromedically relevant data, as well as making data and interpretations available to appropriate parties.  Data sources include scientific Human Subjects Research studies, aviation accident investigations, and aviation accident autopsies.

Community Engagement - Long Beach, CA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Long Beach Airport (LGB) will co-host a public informational webinar on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Representatives from various FAA lines of business will be joined by LGB staff, along with members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), and the Long Beach Airport Association (LBAA) [invited].

Forensic Science Section

The Forensic Sciences Section conducts toxicological evaluations on aircraft accident fatalities, and continually develops novel methods to answer complex and difficult aeromedical questions. The Forensic Sciences laboratory serves as the primary national site for toxicology testing for federal agencies, including the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The Forensic Sciences Section is made up of two teams; Forensic Toxicology Team and Quality Assurance Team.

Aerospace Medical Research and Safety Assurance Division

The division executes the FAA’s Aeromedical Research Program, which focuses on safety sensitive personnel and airline passenger health, safety, and performance in current and forecasted future civilian aerospace operations. The division also supports ongoing operational safety functions through its radiobiology and pilot incapacitation, incident, and accident medical case review/toxicological analysis programs.
