Cabin Safety Research Workshops are sponsored by the FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), Aerospace Medical Research Division, Protection and Survival Research Lab, Cabin Safety Research Team (AAM-632).

Thank you for your interest in our Cabin Safety Research Workshops. The workshops, held at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, are designed to familiarize interested aviation personnel with important research activities conducted by the FAA in the area of aircraft cabin safety. The Cabin Safety Research Team relies on feedback from industry in order to continue providing the most timely and informed research activities possible. Therefore, it is our endeavor to provide an open forum for exchange of information between industry participants and our research staff.

Workshop topics may include: U.S. aviation regulations, aircraft accidents, aircraft seat and restraint systems, brace-for-impact positions, infant/child restraint systems, aircraft evacuation equipment and procedures, aircraft fire safety systems and procedures, post-crash survival, water survival, emergency equipment and procedures, passenger information research, and fatigue countermeasures research. High-altitude physiological training is included, beginning with classroom instruction about the effects of high altitude on the human body, and concluding with a hypoxia exercise that allows participants to experience the effects of reduced atmospheric oxygen.

Typically, three workshops are scheduled per year, each beginning mid-day on Monday and adjourning mid-day on Friday. Each workshop accommodates up to 30 participants, with no more than three persons attending from any single organization. Because of the limited availability, we urge you to select attendees from your organization who are in a position to disseminate information to the greatest number of people, typically instructors, in-flight managers, or safety representatives. Cabin Safety Research Workshops are neither intended, nor conducted, as training sessions; they are instead designed to provide supplemental state-of-the-art information for use by aviation industry personnel to enhance their own training programs and operations.

Assignments to the workshops are awarded in the order that registration forms are received. Since the workshops fill quite rapidly, it is important to submit a registration form as soon as possible. After we have received it, confirmation packages, which include additional information about the workshops, will be sent to the successful applicants. There are no fees for workshop attendance; however, participants are responsible for their own lodging, transportation, and meals, both to Oklahoma City for the workshop, as well as between the place of lodging, the Visitors Center, and CAMI.
