SMS is a formal, top-down, organization-wide approach to managing safety risk and ensuring the effectiveness of safety risk controls. An SMS is made up of four components.

Airports Data and Airspace Branch

Mission

The Airports Data & Airspace Branch is responsible for development and support of airport data management policy and tools. This includes geospatial and airport master record data collection and coordination to ensure airport data is accurate. This branch is responsible for the development and support of airport airspace policy and standards and is the FAA focal point for the Airport Cooperative Research Program.

Airports Design and Construction Branch

Mission

The Airports Design & Construction Branch is responsible for engineering standards for design, equipment, construction, and maintenance of civil airports. This includes airside and landside airport development such as airfield geometry, pavement, visual aids, and navigational aids.

NextGen Advisory Committee

The objective of the NextGen Advisory Committee (NAC) is to provide independent advice and recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and to respond to specific taskings received directly from FAA. The advice, recommendations, and taskings relate to concepts, requirements, operational capabilities, the associated use of technology, and related considerations to operations that affect the future of the Air Traffic Management System and the integration of new technologies.
