Airports Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) Program

Airfield geometry is a primary contributing factor for runway incursions. After analyzing more than six years of national runway incursion data between 2007 and 2013, we developed a preliminary inventory of locations (initial version released in July 2015) at airports where risk factors might contribute to a runway incursion. To address these issues, we initiated a comprehensive multi-year Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) program to identify, prioritize, and develop strategies to help airport sponsors mitigate risk at these locations.

  • RIM Location Inventory (as of 9/30/2024)
The FAA developed this inventory of airport locations where multiple runway incursions (RIs) occurred. The RI data collected from 2007-2023 indicates airport locations where three or more annual RIs occurred in a given calendar year or the location averaged at least one RI per year. The FAA, airports, and industry develop mitigation projects in addressing RIs at these locations. As these mitigation projects finalize and the FAA collects additional data on RIs, the FAA will update this inventory as necessary.

Note: A list of the runway incursions at each airport and their severity rating of A, B, C, or D may be found at FAA Aviation Safety and Information Analysis and Sharing.

Airport Design Tecnical Video Series

The Runway Incursion Mitigation Program's success hinges primarily on the proper design of taxiways entering a runway. The videos below, based on our current guidance, are one source for education to that endeavor. See also Advisory Circular 150/5300-13, Airport Design, which defines, in detail, the standards described in these videos and the Airport Design Technical Video Series, accessible via the graphic to the right.

Runway Incursion Mitigation

This video summarizes how the FAA's Runway Incursion Mitigation Program utilizes metrics to measure program performance and provides examples of the range of mitigation strategies deployed. Released January 2022.

Runway Safety Area and Runway Incursion Mitigation Programs

This video outlines the success of previous initiatives to enhance airport safety and discusses the national efforts underway to further reduce the risk of runway incursions at airports. The video also covers the FAA's collaborative partnerships with the aviation community to improve runway safety at U.S. airports. Released May 2016.

Runway Incursion Mitigation Case Studies

The Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) program leverages GIS runway incursion data to highlight focus areas at certain airports where taxiway geometry mitigation strategies should be implemented. This video highlights two success stories. Released July 2019.
