Aeronautical Center Continues Piling Up Energy Savings Incentives

OGE
Oklahoma Gas & Electric

The Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) is continuing its record-setting pace toward energy conservation efforts in meeting our mandated energy reduction goals and is continuing to garner utility incentives to reduce operational costs for the Center. Since the MMAC began participating in Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E) utility company’s Continuous Energy Improvement (CEI) program, the MMAC has consistently been one of the top performers in electrical energy reduction. Under the program, OG&E offers a 2-cent per kilowatt-hour (kWh) incentive for customers to partner with OG&E’s energy consultants to establish conservation programs and implement energy savings opportunities.

During the initial participation year in FY 2018, the MMAC realized a savings of over 2,000,000 kWh under the program and received an incentive of nearly $42,000 – more savings than any other participant! In FY 2019 participating in the program as an alumni member, the MMAC realized an additional savings of 1,973,610 kWh – again, saving more than any other current or alumni participant – earning an incentive of over $39,000. Although energy reductions associated with maximum telework have been subtracted out of the incentives since March 2020, the MMAC has continued to be a top performer.

In total, the MMAC has received over $183,000 in incentives for saving over 8 million kWh since the program start! Due to challenges with federal agencies receiving monetary payments, the incentives have been converted into an equivalent value of renewable energy certificates that allowed the MMAC to exceed our renewable energy goal each year providing an average of over 20% of MMAC electrical usage being credited to renewable sources.

The MMAC will continue to participate in OG&E’s Continuous Energy Improvement program through at least 2022 participating again as an alumni member and will receive additional incentive for additional reductions in electric consumption. MMAC Energy Savings ChartTo achieve additional reductions, AMP is continuing to implement new and improved energy saving technologies like LED lighting, occupancy sensor lighting controls, and more efficient heating and cooling equipment into maintenance and renovation projects. In addition to new technologies, the MMAC also continues to urge employees to further conservation by providing information through center-wide news articles and emails and hopes to return to on-site events like Earth Day celebrations soon. Environmental representatives from MMAC organizations are also encouraged at quarterly Environmental Network meetings to remind employees to help out by turning off lights and equipment whenever possible and by promptly reporting energy waste such as malfunctioning heating and cooling equipment to AMP for repairs.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the MMAC Energy Program, please contact the MMAC energy manager at (405) 954-9610.

Aeronautical Center Story

Senator Mike MonroneyThe Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center occupies approximately 133 buildings, is located on 1,100 acres in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and has a heritage rich in aviation.  For over 70 years, the Aeronautical Center has played a vital role in the success of the aviation industry and is an important part of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) since its early beginnings in 1946.  The Center is named after Oklahoma Senator, A.S. "Mike" Monroney, who served as Chairman on the Aviation Subcommittee.  He was responsible for writing and sponsoring the Federal Aviation Act of 1958 which helped to create the Federal Aviation Administration.

Aerial Image of the Mike Monroney Aeronautical CenterToday, the Center is home to over 6,300 Federal employees, contractors, and students that work in a wide variety of FAA organizations, performing critical functions that touch every aspect of the National Airspace System (NAS).  The mission of the Center is to directly support the safe and efficient operations for our national and international aviation systems and provide competitive business solutions for our customers.

The Center provides products and services to all five of the FAA’s lines of business - airport, air traffic organization, aviation safety, commercial space transportation and security and hazardous materials safety. Each of these ventures are represented at the Center, giving the Center a diverse customer portfolio extending beyond the FAA to many other federal agencies including the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, all modes within the Department of Transportation, the Security Exchange Commission, and many more.

Facility Management

Facility ManagementVision

The Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center aspires to have a world class Environmental, Occupational Safety & Health Program which emphasizes a culture where management and employees collaborate to create a workplace where there is no harm to employees or the environment.

Mission

The mission of the Facilities Services Division is to be the leader in:

  • Protecting FAA employees, contractors and students, the environment, and the nation's natural resources
  • Preventing employee injury and illness, pollution and waste, and inefficient use of natural resources
  • Promoting continuous improvement throughout the Aeronautical Center community
  • Preserving the FAA mission

Goals

  • Maintain safe and healthful work environment for employees, contractors, students, and visitors at the Aeronautical Center
  • Lead the effort to reduce energy and water use at the Aeronautical Center by adopting best industry practices and cost-effective, energy-efficient technologies.
  • Effectively manage the Aeronautical Center Environmental Occupational Safety and Health Management System (EOSHMS) to reduce the environmental impacts and minimize and/or eliminate occupational safety and health OSH) impacts in order to be good stewards of the environment and to improve employee health & safety
  • Rebate History from 2011 to 2017 Develop and implement information technology solutions for Facility Management to ensure effective management and operation of Aeronautical Center facilities.

Since it began in 2011, MMAC has received over $375,000 worth of RECs using the "Rebates-to-RECs" program to meet renewable energy requirements. This equates to credit for over 100,000 megawatt hours of electric energy — enough to power nearly 10,000 homes for a whole year!
