General Aviation Safety Challenges

Every airport is unique, and complex runway and taxiway configurations can lead pilots to make mistakes in the air and on the ground, but there are several general aviation safety challenges pilots frequently encounter. The From the Flight Deck videos below address some of those common issues and offer ways to stay safe. Click to view the videos below or read more about them.

Falcon Field, Mesa, AZ (FFZ)

Falcon Field Airport (FFZ) is a primarily general and business aviation airport located approximately 14 miles east of Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). A narrow corridor of airspace exists above the FFZ Class Delta airspace, and below the Class Bravo airspace for PHX, providing a way for VFR aircraft to transition through the area without the need to contact ATC.

Dekalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK)

Dekalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK) is a primarily general aviation airport located fifteen miles north-northeast of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). PDK hosts a high volume of corporate/general aviation jet traffic as well as pilot training operations for approximately ten flight schools based on the field.

Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (DVT)

Deer Valley Airport (DVT) is a predominantly business, and general aviation airport. It boasts a large permanently based aircraft population. Located approximately 17 miles north of Phoenix Sky Harbor, DVT is a convenient alternative to the larger and more congested airport. This convenience has led DVT to become one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country.

Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB)

Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB) is a multi-use airport serving air carriers, as well as corporate and general aviation operators. The airport is also home to numerous flight schools, including the Daytona Beach campus for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The mix of traffic ranging from the professional airline pilot to pre-solo student pilots presents unique challenges to both pilots and controllers. View a printable Pilot Handbook of the DAB information found on this Web page.

Dane County Regional Airport-Truax Field (MSN)

Dane County Regional Airport-Truax Field (MSN), is a large multi-use airport located on the north side of the city of Madison, Wisconsin. The airport serves air carriers, military, cargo, business, and general aviation. The pilot experience level goes from the basic new student all the way to seasoned air carrier or military pilot. The airport configuration consists of three intersecting runways and a complex system of taxiways. View a printable Pilot Handbook of the MSN information found on this Web page.

Danbury Municipal Airport (DXR)

Danbury Municipal Airport (DXR) is a primarily general and business aviation airport located southwest of the city of Danbury, Connecticut. While the bulk of the traffic is general aviation, DXR does have some air taxi operations as well as several flight schools offering fixed and rotor wing instruction. DXR is geographically located in a “bowl” with higher terrain surrounding it. View a printable Pilot Handbook of the DXR information found on this Web page.

Chicago Executive Airport (PWK)

Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) is a medium sized, primarily business, and general aviation airport located seven miles north of Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Pilots should be aware that it has its own Class Delta airspace, which underlies the Class Bravo airspace around O'Hare. Due to the airspace design and the proximity to O'Hare, all IFR approaches conducted to Chicago Executive are to runway one six, circle to land if necessary. View a printable Pilot Handbook of the PWK information found on this Web page.

Centennial Airport (APA)

Centennial Airport (APA) is located 20 miles south-southwest of Denver International Airport. APA is on the south end of the metro area near the Denver Tech Center which is a major business district. APA is also home to numerous flight schools. The traffic mix of business jets, helicopters and general aviation makes for a challenging airport environment for pilots of all experience levels.
