WASHINGTON – U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will award $495 million in airport infrastructure grants, the second allotment of the total $3.18 billion in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the United States.

“This significant investment in airport improvements in California will fund construction and rehabilitation projects that will help maintain high levels of safety in U.S. aviation,” Chao said.

The California grants include the following awards:

• $12,969,661 to San Diego International Airport taxiway improvements.
• $6,100,672 to Ontario International Airport for taxiway improvements, runway lighting installation and updating the Airport Master Plan Study.
• $2,953,372 to Fresno Yosemite International Airport for runway lighting improvements and terminal building modifications.
• $2,629,140 to Santa Barbara Municipal Airport for security improvements, terminal building improvements and conducting an environmental study.
• $1,607,355 to Bob Maxwell Memorial Airfield for runway and taxiway improvements.
• $1,221,047 to Charles M Schulz-Sonoma County Airport for apron reconstruction. The apron is an area where aircraft park, load and unload passengers and cargo, and refuel.
• $1,044,000 to Hanford Municipal Airport for runway improvements.
• $1,000,135 to Cable Airport for apron improvements.
• $886,490 to John Wayne Airport to update the Airport Master Plan Study.
• $648,450 to Lampson Field Airport for runway and taxiway improvements.
• $600,000 to Jack Northrop Field/Hawthorne Municipal Airport for runway improvements.
• $600,000 to Mariposa-Yosemite Airport for apron and airport drainage improvements.
• $600,000 to San Bernardino Municipal Airport for apron improvements.
• $571,440 to Cloverdale Municipal Airport for taxiway improvements.
• $519,676 to Petaluma Municipal Airport for runway lighting improvements.
• $495,540 to Salinas Municipal Airport for runway improvements.
• $427,500 to Camarillo Airport for taxiway improvements.
• $300,000 to Gnoss Field Airport for runway improvements.
• $277,994 to Imperial County Airport for taxiway and apron improvements.
• $244,782 to Mammoth Yosemite Airport for updating the Airport Master Plan Study.
• $235,234 to Lompoc Airport for runway, runway lighting, taxiway and taxiway lighting improvements.
• $144,000 to Willows-Glenn County Airport for apron improvements.
• $111,600 to Inyokern Airport for taxiway improvements.
• $99,000 to Bakersfield Municipal Airport for apron improvements. $90,000 to Firebaugh Airport to install perimeter fencing.
• $67,500 to Healdsburg Municipal Airport for taxiway and apron improvements.
• $61,020 to Round Valley Airport for runway pavement improvements.

There will be a total of 358 grants to 327 airports in 46 states and the Pacific Islands. Selected projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, construction of firefighting facilities, and the maintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals.  The construction and equipment supported by this funding increases the airports’ safety, emergency response capabilities, and capacity, and could support further economic growth and development within each airport’s region.

Airport infrastructure in the United States, with 3,332 airports and 5,000 paved runways, supports our economic competitiveness and improves quality of life.  According to the FAA’s most recent economic analysis, U.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6 trillion in total economic activity and supports nearly 11 million jobs.  Under Secretary Chao’s leadership, the Department is delivering AIP investments for the American people, who depend on reliable infrastructure. 

Airports can receive a certain amount of AIP entitlement funding each year based on activity levels and project needs.  If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, the FAA can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding.
