The FAA is systematically installing Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology in approach lighting systems across the National Airspace System. Pilots using Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EFVS) with infrared (IR)-based sensors may experience reduced visual performance when operating on approaches to runways equipped with LED approach lights.
Pilots can determine whether LED approach lighting is installed by reviewing the FAA’s Chart Supplement (formerly known as Airport/Facility Directory). When LED lighting is in use, it is noted in the “Additional Remarks” section for the affected airport. Other aeronautical chart providers also publish this information. For example, Jeppesen includes LED lighting details for specific approach lighting systems on the -9A page for applicable airports. The images below provide examples of how this information appears in these publications.
A list of planned LED approach lighting system installations is available in the table below. These documents are updated as new information becomes available, so users should check regularly for the most current data.
