Developed by NASA, Smart Skies is a middle school mathematics program that teaches students about the challenges that air traffic controllers experience every day. Students’ skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are put to the test as they model, investigate, analyze, and resolve air traffic conflicts using exciting hands-on experiments and game simulations.
Used in classrooms for over a decade, Smart Skies continues to be a successful program for teachers in various learning environments. The Smart Skies air traffic control simulator website has received over 250,000 student visits, and through their popular professional development activities, the Smart Skies project team has trained over 3,000 educators. Smart Skies also offers a companion gaming app called Sector 33.
