FLIGHT SERVICE TWO-WAY TEXTING PROGRAM.
Flight Service Two-Way Texting Program
Enroll in the FAA Flight Service two-way texting service to communicate with Alaska Flight Service Station (FSS) controllers via text messaging on a cell phone or participating satellite based device.
The services available at this time:
- SOS/Emergency/SAR messages
- Activate a Flight Plan already on file with FSS
- Amend a Flight Plan already on file with FSS
- Close a Flight Plan already on file with FSS
At this time, Spot X is the only participating satellite device. We plan to expand the services and devices in the future.
To enroll, update your Master Flight Plan with the appropriate satellite device ID or cell phone number. Once enrolled, you will receive detailed instructions to take advantage of the two-way text capability with controllers.
A pilot request must receive a confirmation message from Flight Service to acknowledge receipt.
Communication with FSS controllers is an additional form of ATC communication in Alaska and is recorded and retained.
