Transporting Dangerous Goods by Air: A short video providing information and general guidance about shipping dangerous goods produced in cooperation with Amazon.
Common Dangerous Goods Examples: A short video depicting common dangerous goods around the house, office, and yard produced in cooperation with Amazon.
Safety Data Sheets: A short video reminding that Safety Data Sheets (SDS) may be useful to help answer questions about a product for safety and compliance produced in cooperation with Amazon. The SDS includes information about a product’s chemical and physical properties and may identify if a product is regulated as a dangerous good for air transportation.
Lithium Battery Basics: Lithium Batteries or equipment containing lithium batteries are considered “dangerous goods” because they can pose significant safety risks in transportation. Shippers must ensure batteries are correctly packed, prepared, and communicated to the air carrier to ensure shipments arrive safely.
Lithium Batteries Commercial Shipment: This video covers lithium battery test footage, research results presenting the fire dangers of lithium batteries when onboard aircraft, showing what can happen when batteries are not transported in accordance with international safety requirements, and highlighting key shipping issues.
Lithium Batteries in the Mail: This video explains the prohibition on posting lithium batteries, which are not contained in equipment. It also raises awareness of the hazards of lithium batteries and the importance of ensuring that they are only mailed when contained in equipment such as laptop computers, tablets, and mobile phones.
The following websites provide information about dangerous goods restrictions specific to some air carriers. This list is not all-inclusive:
- United States Postal Service (USPS): USPS Shipper Restrictions. Also, see HAZMAT Shipping Safety Tutorial.
- Federal Express (FedEx): FedEx Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Materials Service Guide
- United Parcel Service (UPS): UPS Shipping Dangerous Goods
- PHMSA Hazardous Materials Outreach & Engagement: The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is an operating administration of the Department of Transportation. The Outreach and Engagement Branch is responsible for enhancing regulatory compliance by developing and disseminating written materials that enable the public to more easily understand and comply with the Hazardous Materials Regulation (HMR) and producing outreach materials designed to help the regulated community meet HMR training requirements. The Branch also develops and publishes the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) and other emergency preparedness and response instructional materials.
- DOT Chart 17 – Hazardous Materials markings, Labeling and Placarding Guide (GOV): DOT Chart 17 is now available as a Section 508 Complaint portable document that operates in a variety of ways and does not rely on a single sense or ability of the user. For the adaptive user, this PDF contains accessible information in both visual and audio formats. The PDF uses accessibility-related software or peripheral devices to maximize use while navigating tags and tabbing, descriptive text (ALT-text), color and graphics, and scalable views.
- PHMSA Lithium Battery Guide for Shippers: This compliance resource was prepared to assist shippers in safely packaging lithium cells and batteries for transport by all modes according to the latest (December 27, 2022; HM-260B) regulatory requirements. This publication directs readers to scenario-based shipping guides that outline the requirements to ship packages of lithium cells and batteries in various configurations. Each distinct shipping guide in this document refers to the regulatory requirements for a specific lithium cell/battery type, configuration, or size.
- ERG 2024: The 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook provides first responders with a manual intended for use during the initial phase of a transportation incident involving hazardous materials/dangerous goods.
